Last year I only made it about a week before life got in the way, so I'll try again.</p><p>My personal goal is to improve my node skills and in particular try to stretch beyond the types of things I would ordinarily attempt.</p><p>In preparation, I'm enjoying reviewing the amazing work of others last year, like through this video from Curtis Holt: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhLVzcCl1ug"></a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhLVzcCl1ug"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JhLVzcCl1ug" width="320" youtube-src-id="JhLVzcCl1ug"></iframe></a></div><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhLVzcCl1ug"><br />http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhLVzcCl1ug</a><p></p><p><br /></p><p>And through my subscription to the Blender Cloud, I'm following the series <a href="https://cloud.blender.org/p/procedural-shading" target="_blank">Procedural Shading: Fundamentals and Beyond</a>.</p><p>I don't know if I will keep up this year, but for me the learning is never wasted. The prompts aren't up yet as of this writing, but they will be here: <a href="http://nodevember.io/">http://nodevember.io/</a></p><p><br /></p>Waylenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00112393302704019159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2282813986659775377.post-74194516925200522052020-09-25T07:34:00.047-05:002020-09-25T07:34:04.020-05:00Open Source Creative podcast<p>I highly recommend the <a href="https://www.opensourcecreative.org/" target="_blank">Open Source Creative</a> podcast. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.opensourcecreative.org/img/opensourcecreativepodcast-about.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="403" data-original-width="800" height="161" src="https://www.opensourcecreative.org/img/opensourcecreativepodcast-about.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p style="text-align: justify;">The host, Jason van Gumster, is one of those folks I've seen for years on the online Blender communities. He's an author, a creator, and an all-around interesting character. </p><p>I first discovered his podcast back when I was thinking of starting my own podcast but his is much better than what I'd had in mind. </p><p>Find the audio in your favorite podcast player. Or visit the website directly. Some episodes are also in video format on the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNpeyMrXe_oJjVtkHcS4sWg" target="_blank">Open Source Creative YouTube Channel</a>.</p><p>If you're a FOSS user, do check it out!</p><p><br /></p>Waylenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00112393302704019159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2282813986659775377.post-7862798304079363012020-09-23T16:39:00.001-05:002020-09-23T17:01:50.008-05:00Jitsi Meet and New Friends<p> Last night I joined in a meeting of a Linux User Group in my state. I'd been meaning to physically attend a meeting for the past 18 years but never did make it happen. With the switch to everything online, I figured it would be cool to finally meet some of these folks. </p><p>The Linux Users of Central Illinois - they announce meetings on their list: <a href="http://www.luci.org/luci-announce/">http://www.luci.org/luci-announce/</a> </p><p>Turns out to be some pretty interesting folks in that group. Like those times my hubby and I attended <a href="https://ohiolinux.org/" target="_blank">Ohio LinuxFest</a> in the mid-2000s. </p><p><br /></p><p>The point of my posting, however, is to say that it was my first time trying <a href="https://jitsi.org/jitsi-meet/" target="_blank">Jitsi Meet</a>. You go to <a href="https://meet.jit.si/">https://meet.jit.si/</a> and either type in the name of an existing meeting to join or else you start a new meeting.</p><p>At one point it wouldn't let me turn my video back on after I'd turned it off, but that may have been a browser/permissions thing. (I was using <a href="https://brave.com/" target="_blank">Brave</a> as my browser, and I'm still new at using that.)</p><p>I liked Jitsi Meet and I think it has some very nice potential. </p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Waylenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00112393302704019159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2282813986659775377.post-53201633014227521172020-09-08T14:59:00.000-05:002020-09-08T14:59:07.097-05:00Waylena returns to the dome Fall 2020<div>Video shot on my phone, put together in Blender's Video Sequence Editor. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7GigpXVYRp0" width="480"></iframe>Waylenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00112393302704019159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2282813986659775377.post-21053810524710438332020-08-10T16:46:00.000-05:002020-08-10T16:46:09.639-05:00Python for Blender tutorialsThere are a lot of tutorials out there on the topic of Python for Blender, but this series is working particularly well for me. <div><br /></div><div>I found this set through <a href="https://www.blendernation.com/" target="_blank">BlenderNation</a>. </div><div><br /></div><div>Raghav Venkat of the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxf8Skg_v09nrDmJGXEuGDQ" target="_blank">cordata</a> Youtube channel has created the series as a playlist.</div><div><b><a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmGhGFnN_vMITtIKBKjPJ1h5C5i-iabqO" target="_blank"></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Python for Blender: Artist Friendly Programming Guide for Addon Development</b></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqcXHXIRA_Q7nvzOk3FinP0jsqtS1JhoKCgXT-tFwoJpwrXPbz7ug_cmDB2vq-vU0q5gYZlTwC01EH7hkmTBFD_bvBRMH-5RrkiIoaxNaKp-Nw50-hJsjBdFCtEp4i-GDkGmfoGP-85Mk/s1093/Screenshot+from+2020-08-10+16-38-06.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="489" data-original-width="1093" height="183" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqcXHXIRA_Q7nvzOk3FinP0jsqtS1JhoKCgXT-tFwoJpwrXPbz7ug_cmDB2vq-vU0q5gYZlTwC01EH7hkmTBFD_bvBRMH-5RrkiIoaxNaKp-Nw50-hJsjBdFCtEp4i-GDkGmfoGP-85Mk/w410-h183/Screenshot+from+2020-08-10+16-38-06.png" width="410" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmGhGFnN_vMITtIKBKjPJ1h5C5i-iabqO">https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmGhGFnN_vMITtIKBKjPJ1h5C5i-iabqO</a></div>Waylenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00112393302704019159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2282813986659775377.post-48532140902577045822020-07-29T17:11:00.000-05:002020-07-29T17:13:42.736-05:00Stellarium remote fun<div class="separator"><div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">I LOVE open source software! </div></div><a href="https://stellarium.org/" target="_blank"></a><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNC-1D-AXhbzcD8ERlAC2QolTvtpS4rQkoh-qtjZuh_26wKujdfvG6GMU2DrjjdcXdOCpB4KPYkd_T-xnpXQsnMYT7spQeCsSsL7SE7RWW4IWhhO_frDS0zb7lz2IIKs0nKm09aTmG83o/s2048/stel4blog1.PNG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Stellarium sky" border="0" data-original-height="1415" data-original-width="2048" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNC-1D-AXhbzcD8ERlAC2QolTvtpS4rQkoh-qtjZuh_26wKujdfvG6GMU2DrjjdcXdOCpB4KPYkd_T-xnpXQsnMYT7spQeCsSsL7SE7RWW4IWhhO_frDS0zb7lz2IIKs0nKm09aTmG83o/w400-h276/stel4blog1.PNG" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://stellarium.org/" target="_blank"></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">Stellarium is one of the top open source software packages for desktop sky viewing. Since I won't be presenting shows in a physical planetarium any time soon, I figured I should work out how to present better online.</span></div>
<br />
Stellarium has a remote web interface plugin that is pretty easy to set up. So I'm using my giant monitor for presentation and my little monitor for controls and for programming.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZhnUkTqSPEHZEdRXZT79uO4m85A0ImIP3bl1-3vZ3PyvooAPzMyKYY-Ev0sIpV8NrVo6jzHS2wlmEq-Or19K2w-olnTgMAOKrKTK7xHHk_sP8tX12KQ7818vLLsWU_tq4hJ5bv5ugtDM/s2048/20200729_160420.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZhnUkTqSPEHZEdRXZT79uO4m85A0ImIP3bl1-3vZ3PyvooAPzMyKYY-Ev0sIpV8NrVo6jzHS2wlmEq-Or19K2w-olnTgMAOKrKTK7xHHk_sP8tX12KQ7818vLLsWU_tq4hJ5bv5ugtDM/w400-h225/20200729_160420.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">I'm clumsy with the on-screen menus, so having them on a separate monitor is great! <br />
One way has been to make custom panoramas for use with <a href="http://stellarium.org/" target="_blank">Stellarium</a>.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
We should be able to use them with our Digistar 6 in the dome when we are able to reopen. I like making content that can be used on different platforms<br />
<br />
<br />
I used a DSLR with a fisheye lens on a tripod to get a good selection of overlapping images, making sure to have some shots with objects of interest centered.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA2O81N96n8v9VidITYlKuxdGjP6XQzphjEwZy9wYsVG6CTdOBuYBDiZDclVFuSyZ5TrjZlyps3GRWTOoVgJhFM2VL4foMzmRpRfzOYqEMZgayLmfE09jokDZvJzIRz6hJrCa4zib_1Yo/s1600/Capture.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="821" data-original-width="1600" height="164" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA2O81N96n8v9VidITYlKuxdGjP6XQzphjEwZy9wYsVG6CTdOBuYBDiZDclVFuSyZ5TrjZlyps3GRWTOoVgJhFM2VL4foMzmRpRfzOYqEMZgayLmfE09jokDZvJzIRz6hJrCa4zib_1Yo/s320/Capture.PNG" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
I used <a href="http://hugin.sourceforge.net/" target="_blank">Hugin</a> to stitch the images. It's not super automatic, but there are builtin tools for aligning and for masking out troublesome spots.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZIUrl6vkKr-6laTeEsJ6DzzjUco6weEyMiUIoU0GAKG8Q5DK2OOLqJTjUddPe9PRdF9opnHQArDWS5_eqz315_w9QIivn_Wd7yhonwi3bikjutF7zs4kasu8M1BhSbmEDBHN2rHfh2Rw/s1600/Capture2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="824" data-original-width="1600" height="164" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZIUrl6vkKr-6laTeEsJ6DzzjUco6weEyMiUIoU0GAKG8Q5DK2OOLqJTjUddPe9PRdF9opnHQArDWS5_eqz315_w9QIivn_Wd7yhonwi3bikjutF7zs4kasu8M1BhSbmEDBHN2rHfh2Rw/s320/Capture2.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Finally, I use <a href="http://www.gimp.org/" target="_blank">Gimp</a> to fix up the nadir a bit and to get rid of the sky. I also fix up any small stitching errors that I missed earlier. Some distant power lines and light poles will end up cut in the process, but I can live with that.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr8KAjpiOS68-C3b8lMrfZPQ9RnJLffQFTE54JkoGhXM9UJdcIyptMegb87fkWeMya1KxUBWoPoNHzY7Wd5srfIkx-Gt9OIdUhz_EjUZPjfOs3xzUr8Yl7g6ARYRp6l6UkWvoiy9c3r38/s1600/Capture3.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="824" data-original-width="1600" height="164" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr8KAjpiOS68-C3b8lMrfZPQ9RnJLffQFTE54JkoGhXM9UJdcIyptMegb87fkWeMya1KxUBWoPoNHzY7Wd5srfIkx-Gt9OIdUhz_EjUZPjfOs3xzUr8Yl7g6ARYRp6l6UkWvoiy9c3r38/s320/Capture3.PNG" width="320" /></a>It's a messy process, but I use brightness and contrast settings and sometimes desaturation to get a nice mask. I work in smaller sections and then combine them.<br /><br /><br />And I usually have to over-mask the vegetation because I don't have the patience to cut out around each leaf.<br />
<br />
<br />
Don't forget to check your edge seams. <b>Layer > Transform > Offset</b> and select "By width/2" with "wrap around" selected for Edge Behavior.<br />
<br />

I love that FOSS is both free as in speech and free as in beer. I love that I can poke around in source code and follow developer mailing lists. I love finding FOSS production tools, techniques and workflows. And I love <a href="https://github.com/waystar/2019-Blender-Workshop-Materials" target="_blank">teaching FOSS</a> tools to others.<div><br /></div><div>I am not, however, a FOSS fundamentalist. </div><div><br /></div><div>At work I use a variety of closed-source software packages and tools. From the software that runs the <a href="https://www.parkland.edu/Audience/Community-Business/Parkland-Presents/Planetarium" target="_blank">planetarium</a> (<a href="https://www.es.com/" target="_blank">Digistar 6</a>) to the usual commercial office and production tools. For production I mostly use FOSS because I'm faster with GIMP than I am with Photoshop, and faster with Inkscape than I am with Illustrator. I had finally started working heavily with After Effects before the shutdowns, but working at home I've been almost entirely FOSS. </div><div><br /></div><div><a href="https://www.blender.org/" target="_blank">Blender</a> </div><div><a href="https://www.libreoffice.org/" target="_blank">LibreOffice</a></div><div><a href="https://www.gimp.org/" target="_blank">Gimp</a></div><div><a href="https://inkscape.org/" target="_blank">Inkscape</a></div><div><a href="https://stellarium.org/" target="_blank">Stellarium</a></div><div><a href="https://www.audacityteam.org/" target="_blank">Audacity</a></div><div><a href="http://hugin.sourceforge.net/" target="_blank">Hugin</a></div><div>...and more, on Linux</div><div><br /></div><div>I prefer Linux whenever possible because to me it's usually friendlier. I am still using my Linux box, but now I've added a Windows 10 machine. The machine is a 2-year old gaming machine. In addition to the regular tools, I can now also run the full version of <a href="https://worldwidetelescope.org/home/" target="_blank">WorldWide Telescope</a>, and <a href="https://www.openspaceproject.com/" target="_blank">OpenSpace</a>. Openspace can be compiled for Linux, but I had not been successful at it yet. (New version should change that.) </div><div><br /></div><div>So now I have a second computer with a commercial OS and some FOSS tools that either aren't available or aren't yet readily available on my favorite FOSS OS. But that's okay. On my Linux box there are tools like <a href="https://github.com/kitone/subtitleeditor" target="_blank">Subtitle Editor</a> and <a href="https://itsfoss.com/vokoscreenng/" target="_blank">VokoscreenNG</a> that aren't available for Windows. (There are alternatives, these are just my favorites at this time.)</div><div><br /></div><div>My favorite FOSS software is both FOSS <i>and</i> multiplatform, but I have plenty of room in my <strike>heart</strike> toolbox for useful software tools that don't fit neatly into any category.</div>Waylenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00112393302704019159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2282813986659775377.post-48354298876697570812020-05-24T12:26:00.001-05:002020-05-27T08:39:50.263-05:00Blendpeaks free add-on for Blender from Oormi Creations<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Wow. I used a flame that I generated in Gimp, then converted it to the XML format using flam3-convert, then used defaults with flam3-generate and rendered with flam3-render.</div>

I'm working on a workflow to generate some for dome use, but not random defaults.</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
Oh yes, I didn't apply any processing, just strung the frames together. </div>

There is so much great info on Blender Animation Nodes, but getting started with them can be a huge step. </h3>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To get Animation Nodes:</div>
<div>
<a href="https://animation-nodes.com/#download">https://animation-nodes.com/#download</a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Getting started guide:</div>
<div>
<a href="https://animation-nodes-manual.readthedocs.io/en/latest/user_guide/getting_started/interface.html">https://animation-nodes-manual.readthedocs.io/en/latest/user_guide/getting_started/interface.html</a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I needed a tutorial to apply some theory, so I gave this one a try:</div>
<div>
<a href="https://youtu.be/xcjrD5SwQBw">https://youtu.be/xcjrD5SwQBw</a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And here is my result:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/PICxEYvYT-c/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PICxEYvYT-c?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm very pleased and I look forward to making some interesting things to put up on the planetarium dome. </div>

<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="http://linuxecke.volkoh.de/vokoscreen/vokoscreen.html" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="423" data-original-width="615" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDdC-artzKGqhHtX750-A-t624Yn_5KfaDcEk5A2zj3Vc9IpIGkRrjXeVk6YmnOhORzYFZkxFqx25cd-dBWBjqv96M3gGEgwKvTsDTisjV_cDt0zXiz-eW_jHZT8muWqWcuPxMtJ9rPpQ/s320/Selection_010.png" width="320" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://linuxecke.volkoh.de/vokoscreen/vokoscreen.html" target="_blank">vokoscreen is simple and straightforward</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I've been a fan of <a href="https://obsproject.com/" target="_blank">OBS studio</a> and it still is pretty amazing, but with my new microphone, a Samson Q2U USB, it is giving me headaches on my Linux laptop. It will not consistently keep settings to record video from builtin webcam and the audio from ONLY the usb mic.<br />
<br />
I can use <a href="https://www.maartenbaert.be/simplescreenrecorder/" target="_blank">SimpleScreenRecorder</a> or <a href="http://recordmydesktop.sourceforge.net/index.php" target="_blank">recrodMyDesktop</a> if I don't need to occasionally have the webcam video added. Both of those work extremely well.<br />
<br />
But of course I want it all, and wherever possible I want it open source. I'm working on some video walk-throughs of interesting blend files I've made to help teach others who might be interested. And being able to record with the least hassle is extremely important.<br />
<br />
It seems to be Linux-only which is sad, and I don't even think it's being developed any more. But for now, <a href="http://linuxecke.volkoh.de/vokoscreen/vokoscreen.html" target="_blank">vokoscreen</a> is just what I need.<br />

I have found <a href="https://publicdomainvectors.org/">publicdomainvectors.org</a> to be useful. The admins of that site have now created a site closer to the spirit of the old openclipart.org site: <a href="https://freesvg.org/">freesvg.org</a><br />

I might try some of these, since I want to step up my node-based procedural textures game!<br />

I won't have time to do them all, but I'll try to some of them. I will of course be using <a href="http://blender.org/" target="_blank">Blender</a>, but any procedural/node based software can be used.</div>

<br />
It was special for me because my planetarium career started at Ritter Planetarium in February 1992. Honestly I had planned to stop conducting workshops for a few years so that I could concentrate on my GLPA executive community duties. But Alex Mak asked so of course I said yes.<br />
<br />
The result is a very revised version <i>*NEW!*</i> for Blender 2.8:<br />

Drop me a line if you find mistakes or OS-related differences. (I test on Linux and Windows.) Also, let me know if you find any of it particularly useful and I would LOVE to see what you make.<br />
<br />
And of course, if you are having trouble with something in particular that you are trying to do, let me know. If I can't help get it to work, I might be able to suggest alternate approaches to get the same effect.Waylenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00112393302704019159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2282813986659775377.post-34113596220046349492019-10-10T16:18:00.000-05:002019-11-01T17:11:33.944-05:00Vahana VR & VideoStitch Studio<h3>
<a href="https://github.com/stitchEm/stitchEm" target="_blank">Vahana VR & VideoStitch Studio</a>: software to create immersive 360° VR video, live and in post-production.</h3>
<br />
I ran across this by accident today. I don't yet have a dual camera setup to work with, but I want to be prepared. I ran across a discussion thread talking about the software and then the thread turned to sadness with a post that the company making it had folded. Then at the end was another post linking to another thread cheering the revival of the software as an open source project with the MIT License.<br />
<br />

<br />
Honestly it has been a few years since I've built my own packages. Hopefully I can satisfy the dependencies through package managers at least. (If I had time to compile <i>everything</i>, I would still be running Gentoo. It ran mighty fast, but compiling time added up.)<br />
<br />
If and when I manage to trying it out, I will be sure to update.<br />
<br />Waylenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00112393302704019159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2282813986659775377.post-6674074715181709422019-10-03T08:18:00.000-05:002019-10-03T08:28:10.512-05:00Update on class: 3D Data Visualization for Science Communication<br />
I am still here, I promise! Been away from work and prepping for the upcoming GLPA conference.<br />
<br />
In the midst of all that, I've been taking the <a href="https://www.coursera.org/learn/data-visualization-science-communication?" target="_blank">Coursera class</a> mentioned last month. Although the instructors emphasize Houdini because that's what they use for cinematic rendering, they do mentioned Blender frequently. I have installed the apprentice version of Houdini (yay for Linux version!) but haven't had time to learn it. Thus I am doing the assignments in Blender.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://youtu.be/RHyLfSNUidQ" target="_blank">Solar System render</a> from specific assignment parameters using textures provided.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://youtu.be/RHyLfSNUidQ" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="180" data-original-width="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXbtzbQQmMYJB70hunYIb7D4JPdOAS9O9qHp6e-pK0YVsorQLljFEIPHtV8PIGtV7QU222fx_2P5DCcZqcL4acLX4LILepQv7GU0hRol-QPt7OUR2RmJ2ryywl1uintdjDigyj5olqzvQ/s1600/mq2.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The instructors are doing a great job of breaking down concepts and using those concepts as they explain how and why they decide on approaches to their work. The quizzes are challenging and thought provoking.<br />
<br />
In my own work, I mostly create science illustrations rather than visualizations. Even so, I find myself putting more focused thought into my work now. And I like that. I like that a lot.Waylenahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00112393302704019159noreply@blogger.com0
